What to Expect Before Surgery
When your pet has been scheduled for a consultation at the Veterinary Specialty Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador, it has been based on a referral from your regular family veterinarian.
This consultation will involve:
· A conversation with both a technician and the surgeon
· A physical examination of your pet
· Possible further diagnostic testing on the day of the appointment
· Possible medical procedures depending on the nature of the problem
Some of these tests require fasted samples and/or sedation to perform the test. Please do not feed your pet after 10pm on the evening before the scheduled appointment. Water is okay until the morning of the appointment.
In most cases the consultation and diagnostic testing will be performed on the scheduled consult day and surgery, if necessary, will be scheduled for the following day. This will vary depending on the nature of the problem but is the standard protocol for surgical referrals.
Please know that no tests, procedures or surgery will be performed without your consent and a full discussion of the procedures, post-op care and potential complications
