Holiday Eats and your Pet
Holiday Hazards

The yummy holiday season is here! Yes, we said yummy. There’s so many tasty treats to go around, all of which are tempting not only for you, but your pets. While you may want to give your furry friend one of your holiday treats, in this case, it’s best not to share.

Here’s how to keep your pet well fed and away from the emergency department this holiday season:

  • Keep bones away from pets. Bones can get stuck in throats, stomachs, and intestines, resulting in surgery. It’s best to discard them appropriately.
  • Gravy is for tomorrow’s leftovers, not Fido’s dish. Gravy and sauces can cause vomiting and diarrhea. If you want your pet to have a special “holiday meal”, stick to pet food and treats and don’t share from your own leftovers. You can however, give your pet a small amount of plain meat with no skin, fat, bones, spices or sauces. Vegetables such as carrots or potatoes cooked in plain water (not salt water) without spices or sauces could also be considered. But be mindful of your pet’s digestive system before offering.
  • Sweets aren’t sweet for your pet. There’s always more sweets around this time of the year. It is very important to keep these out of reach of pets. Chocolate is toxic, as is xylitol (found in “sugar free” sweets), and both can result in serious illness. Any human treat can end up causing tummy upset that results in an emergency visit. In a household with pets, it is safest not to put edible presents under the trees - dogs find chocolate very appealing and can sniff it out!
  • Put a cork in it. Your pet may find adult holiday beverages appealing - but alcohol can be very dangerous for pets. Always replace tops and put unattended drinks well out of reach of curious pets.

These are just a few things to keep in mind while you enjoy your holiday feast with your family and friends.  If something unexpected should happened during the holiday season, our clinic is open 24/7, 365 days per year.
