Holiday Giving for your Pet
Who can resist buying your pet something special during the holidays? There are many products out there marketed for pets that are great. There is also many products that are not safe for pets. Holiday themed gifts can pose a hazard. But we can help!
Here’s a list of what to watch:
- 1Avoid Rawhide. These chews and bones come in festive shapes with red and green colours added. Compressed rawhide is very hard and can break teeth. Regular rawhide can result in tummy upset if ingested or intestinal obstruction if the pieces swallowed are too large.
- 2Size matters. Always buy toys that are an appropriate size for your pet. Toys and chews that are too small can be swallowed and cause an intestinal obstruction or choking hazard.
- 3Rethink ribbon. Cats love ribbons and strings, but toys with these features pose a serious risk if swallowed.
- 4Trust your gut. If your dog is a chewer, avoid items that are easily destructible and might be swallowed. You should also avoid items that are excessively hard and may break teeth. Look for toys meant to be chewed on but have some give to them.
Our pets are our family and we want to include them in every aspect of the holidays. It’s better to spend more money on one excellent quality toy, than get several poor quality items that may not last or, at worst, will result in a pet emergency! More holiday tips will be posted next week.
