Blood Donor Program | Veterinary Specialty Centre - St. John's NL

Blood Donor Program

Today’s Donor Could Be Tomorrow’s Receiver

As a 24-hour referral and emergency hospital, many of the cases we treat require life-saving blood transfusions such as:

  • Severe trauma (i.e., motor vehicle accidents, dog attacks, arterial cuts)
  • Rat bait toxicity
  • Von Willebrands disease (common in Dobermans)
  • Haemophilia
  • Haemolytic anemia (destruction of red cells secondary to immune mediated diseases or onion toxicity)
  • Immune mediated thrombocytopenia (destruction of platelets)
  • Life threatening infections
  • Cancer

Donor Benefits

Our donor heroes help by keeping our in-house blood bank continuously stocked to save the life of another pet. In return, each hero receives:

  • Free Laboratory Testing
    • Full blood work during the first donation, then annually going forward (over a $200 value)
    • For every donation, free laboratory testing of red blood cells (PCV) and total protein laboratory tests to ensure they are not anemic (over a $50 value)
    • Cats will be tested for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and Feline Leukemia Virus, if required
  • Free health assessment (over a $75 value)
  • Free unit of blood or plasma transfusion for each unit of blood donated ($500.00/per unit)
  • Free blood donor tag
  • Lots of TLC from our staff for being a hero
